Dear Sir/Madam, Please be informed that ISTAC, IIUM is organizing a one-day seminar featuring a distinguished speaker, Prof. Dr. George F. McLean from The Council for Research in Values and Philosophy, Washington D. C. and three other local scholars as respondents. The decision was based on the need to know the perception of the West towards Islam.
Therefore, we seek your staunch support by participating in this seminar ONE-DAY SEMINAR ON 'WESTERN PERCEPTIONS OF ISLAM' INTRODUCTION We may know how Islam has been perceived in the West in the last decade or the last century through our readings or reports on Islam and Muslims written by Orientalists and the Western media of the past, but of how Islam and the Muslims is seen today is something that we must know through the first-hand report on Islam. On the other hand, how should Islam respond to the West with its Western limited understanding of Islam, their inadequate knowledge of the conditions of Muslims today and their incorrect perspectives of the Muslim's way of life and faith. The seminar which will present the viewpoints of the East and the West on how Islam is seen by the West and we will also invite Muslim scholars to respond to Western and Eastern ideas on Islam and Muslims today.At least four scholars from the United States, excluding the U.S. Embassy in Malaysia, The Sudan, Iran and Turkey will gather at ISTAC to meet the challenges of ideas and perceptions that have been for a long time gone unanswered. We are inviting more than a hundred participants from all over the country, especially from universities, government departments and local colleges to discuss and elaborate further on this subject and to share ideas with our scholars and intellectuals who have been involved in this field for many years. As such, the programme is viewed as significant in providing a platform for intellectual discourse and exposure to the students, staff and also the public.
