Bismillahirahmanira him
Modern Education versus Divine Destination The following after dinner talk was
given by Sheikh Effendi in the presence of an Asian politician and his son who
had just graduated. We are asking forgiveness from Allah Almighty, and
blessings. Every movement, meeting, and gathering must begin with
Bismillahirahmanira him. Since they are living for Allah, mankind must try to
give their effort for His sake [try to give their efforts for Him]. Otherwise
they are useless.
We have this honourable visitor and his son as guests here tonight, and I feel
inspired to ask the son: "What are you learning? What would you like to be?" He
resembles somebody who has got a rifle in his hand but does not yet know how to
shoot with it. The educational system, spread also in the islamic world, is
foolish because they don`t give children a
direction to take. Your son here is 18 years old and still doesn`t know what he
wants to be. Allah Almighty created everybody with a special talent, be it
doctor, shopkeeper, or director of kitchen. Just like the medical system is
divided into many different sectors, Allah Almighty granted a different
specialty to everyone (even to Scheik J. here), creating from pre-eternal up to
eternal, without making photocopies.
Each creation and every thing [A1]is unique, and the same is true for His holy
attributes. Your son has a specialty that he doesn't know yet. His father
wasn't planning to be a minister. (Maybe a fisherman?) It is an important point
for members of the present
generation to know their specialties, and develop them; hence the existence of
a ministry of education. How many branches can a university hold? Maybe ten or
twenty? Do you think that youngsters` capacities don`t number any more than
twenty?! Still they are sending
so many young people to universities. How are all these doctors, teachers,
engineers supposed to find work? In London I was once reading a book about
"Arts & HandiCrafts. It had descriptions of about 10.000 different professional
branches. In one room you can
find about fifty different jobs that require trained people specialized for
each work.
There is no work for all those students when they graduate from university. "Go
and take your certificate" is all they are told. [Every wrong thing is]
Everything that is wrong is because people don`t know their place and
destination in creation, and [their real importance] what really matters. Take
the medical profession, for instance: out of a thousand doctors only about five
are apt for their work. Your son here is eighteen but doesn`t know his
specialty.
One day Grandsheikh called me in as a translator for a young and very tall
guy from Oxford University sent by a famous scholar named J.J. Bennett. They
had a spiritual training with an Indonesia teacher called Subud. The visitor
said he had been sent by his master J.J. Bennett who was embracing islam. His
name, like Grandsheikh` s grandfather` s name, was Muhammad Ali. "My teacher is
concerned about Pädagogik , and his question runs as follows: I would like to
know which child has a talent for what, and what it was created
for: soldier, carpenter, baker, so many things. How can I know for what a child
is suitable, and give it adequate training?"
Grandsheikh replied: "You cannot find this knowledge in books. Rather it is
arranged: a secret treasure, an ability and a talent hidden and locked in the
hearts of people. You must go to someone who keeps the keys of hearts`
treasures. Then you can understand. It is
not easy." The visitor was both happy and surprised. Wondering how to reach to
this level he received the following reply: "Of everything that is hidden you
must find a way to reveal its secret. You must put your knowledge into the
ground, so that it can disappear, with the
rain and the seasons passing. Some takes roots, some dwindles away: `It
sacrificed itself`, is how a farmer would put it. In spring you may discover
some sprouts pushing their way through the ground, and soon becoming a full
grown ear of wheat. Up to seven hundred ears may grow from one grain!" You must
sacrifice your physical being to understand your
spiritual being.
Don`t think that new onions will grow from an onion that is just put into a
cellar. It must be put under the earth in order to grow. People want to be
doctors, chemists, engineers. They are wasting their energy, wasting their
lives. That is tariqa. Without seclusion - going under the earth - you don`t
reach anything. The secret of destination is so important, but
billions of youngsters don`t know their destination. You are 18 and don`t know
your professional direction. What is important for us: to run on dunya our real
being. May Allah give us good understanding. - Fatiha
