Ha! Reading that sounds very familiar, we moved from PowerDNS to knot for basically exactly the same reasons! Our solution was a little bit different and works well in our environment. https://www.fastmail.com/blog/moving-fastmail-dns-to-knot/ The biggest improvement we found was batching zone adds/deletes in a single knotc conf-commit.
