Are you sure?
I often use it,

  use Modern::Perl;
  my $h = { foo => { bar => 'foobar' } };
  say "my string with $h->{foo}->{bar}";
  say "my string with $h->{foo}{bar}";

outputs:

  my string with foobar
  my string with foobar
