But what if you want to make an exception from the norm, which might be to
automatically renew.  If it is going to be forced without option, then I agree,
take the checkbox option away completely.  But if not, then have it there,
checked, with the ability to turn it off.

Why would anyone not want the automatic renewal on an item?  Perhaps it is a
special case loan that can't stay out the extra days.
