Otherwise we need to reinvent this wheel. The current implementation of biblio-biblioitems is very poor. I agree with your argument that we should look to the future, allowing for work, manifestation, etc. Koha has not been designed with that in mind. Just books-items. So yes, it will need (a lot of) attention.
