At the moment on Ubuntu 16.04.05 it is not possible to get an official release upgrade from mariadb. On Ubuntu 18 it's "10.1.34-MariaDB-0ubuntu0.18.04.1". Out of the box that doesn't work. You just need another release package from another source.
