(not in test > plan) It works fine if you map it, I added subfield k to default and mapped it to the field. Editing in the 'manage items' or 'items' tab correctly sets the value - the only place you have a conflict is in batch editing - it seems the 'marc' value wins in that case I think we could add some tooltips or something to indicate that they aren't stored in the marc, and that tying them to the marc may be odd.
