It's more likely an issue with the code in C4/Search.pm that parses queries - the colon is used to separate an index code from the search term (e.g., try ti:cars in in OPAC), so a search for "3:10" is misinterpreted as a search for 10 in the nonexistent index '3'. I'll be doing some poking around with the query processor in the next couple weeks or so, but anybody who wants to take a crack at this is more than welcome to as well.
