Instead of changing the file, you could also work with a copy and make
Koha use that instead of the normal file. That will keep your changes
safe from updates. The path to your XSLT file can be stored in the
system preferences:

XSLTDetailsDisplay
OPACXSLTDetailsDisplay
XSLTResultsDisplay
OPACXSLTDetailsDisplay
