The trigger for the change from Koha 2.x to Koha 3.x was the introduction of Zebra and a new presentation theme. Nothing quite so revolutionary occurred to trigger a change from 3.x to 4.x. Additionally, a move to 4.x might have caused some confusion for victims of a particular fork. As we have time-based releases in May and November each year, the 'yy.mm' pattern makes a lot of sense.

What triggered the change from 1.x to 2.x? From the 'Timeline', it looks like MARC support was added at v1.3. Was it just that we'd reached 1.9 and 2.0 was logically the next place to go?

I think the Timeline on the About page is an awesome community asset. Thanks to those who maintain it!
