Indeed the Koha 18.05 manual says there is a system preference named
"OPACShowBarcode", but no further information is given. The preference
actually doesn't seem to exist anymore in Koha 18.05...
however table "systempreferences" in my demo installation of Koha 18.05
does NOT contain the variable "OPACShowBarcode" anymore...

In Bugzilla I found issue

As it turns out the new Koha menu "Administration > Columns settings >
OPAC" was introduced with Koha 17.11 where column "item_barcode" is
deactivated by default. But you can turn it on there, see
