TheALL INDIA MAHILA SANSKRIT SANGATHANA(AIMSS)of Karnataka State Committee had organised a Seminar on 29-10-04 at Central College, Senate Hall, Smt.B.S.Pratibha Kumari, Treasurer, AIMSS Karnataka welcomed the gathering. The Seminar commenced with inspiring songs by Ankura Cultural Troupe. The programme was inaugurated by famous Film and Tele serial Director Sri.T.N.Seetharam. In his speech he said, "Today the atrocities and indignities on women are increasing to such an extent that they are becoming a day-to- day affair and continuous projection of obscenity and crime in the media is leading to the destruction of sensitivity in our society. In the background of Globalisation, there is a continuous attack on the cultural fabric of our society and TV programmes which are sensational, having commercial purpose and of vulgar taste are increasing. We do not want this opium-intoxicated happiness but a happiness of a healthy society. I am pouring out my fears and anxiety over today's happenings before you and this is not an intellectual exercise. If we speak of 'each one to oneself' theory in today's degenerated atmosphere, then, everybody's condition will be disastrous" he said. Later, Sri Manjeri Sundar Raj from Kerala addressed the gathering. In his speech he suggested alternative measures to curb obscenity. He said that obscenity is a curse to the entire society and this can be curbed only through social struggle. Prof.J.S. Patil, Dean of Law Faculty, Gulbarga University, placed his views on Obscenity in the visual media. He said, "Today obscenity on the Internet, mobile and other developed forms of Information Technology has increased without barriers. Today various democratic institutions and government itself are blind and inactive in curbing obscenity. Therefore it is the responsibility of one and all to pressurise the government to frame new laws and take up pro-people measures". He discussed at length the various defects in today's legislations to curb obscenity and in turn suggested certain points, which can provide teeth to the laws to bite. Com. Aparna B.R, State Secretary of AIMSS addressing the gathering said that depiction of violence in today's films is highly worrying. In the name of portraying injustice, a greater injustice is done to the society by destroying the subtle and sensitive feelings while projecting violent scenes. "The guidelines of the Censor Board and various Acts and Legislations are only for name sake. To put an end to this, a powerful movement should be built up," she said. Later there was an interaction with the audience on the topic. Mr.R.Nagesh, Former President of the Nataka Academy and Drama Director, shared his views regarding crime serials which are following the path of yellow journalism and developing disgust about life. Dr.H.G.Jayalakshmi, All India General Secretary of AIMSS, in her concluding speech said "Today we are living in a society which is perverted and rotten. To transform this society into a beautiful one, we are to develop an effective struggle. Today's government is not only blind but also deaf in curbing obscenity. The spread of obscenity is destroying the ethical and moral fabric of the student and youth community. While developing politico-legal movement, we should also organise socio-cultural movement to fight against these problems." The programme was presided over by Dr Sudha Kamath, President AIMSS, Karnataka State. She called upon the conscious people of the state, particularly women to come forward positively to check the growth of obscenity and violence in the media.
