Sending fake "typing" event may solve this problem, but will create a new one,
i.e. it will trigger the "your correspondent is typing" feature on the peer
each and every minute.
The video stream, as far as I can tell, does not go through the infrastructure
servers, they are implemented using peer to peer connections. Hence closing
the connection with the server does not "technically" imply closing the cam
one. My guess is that Kopete is the one responsible for shutting it off when it
receives a "$username has left the chat" message from the server due to
inactivity.
Other Linux clients, such as Mercury messenger, know how to differentiate
between these events and the real ending of a chat session, so this is a bug in
kopete that needs fixing, not a protocol design error that may be bypassed
using fragile tricks. (I wouldn't say that Mercury is perfect when dealing with
webcams, but so far I switch to it when I want to use mine. Switches off the
cam only when either peer asks for it explicitely or closes his/her chat
window, and the image does not flicker like in kopete).
