Weird. Seems to work now (0.11.1) from my home internet connection.
Either the library's (that's where I used the machine mainly) firewall is
blocking some traffic, which gaim doesn't need or it can circumvent the
firewall (choose different port maybe) or it has to with the characteristics of
the wireless connection (packetdrop?), as I'm now on an ethernet. Although
the latter is quite unlikely.
I'll have a look at this in more detail, when I'm in the library again.
Till then blame it on the byzantine network configurtion.
