I've packaged 0.12 as 'kopete' in the KDE:Backports project for openSUSE.  

With RPM you can put
Obsoletes: kdenetwork-InstantMessenger <= 3.5.3
Conflicts: kdenetwork-InstantMessenger
in kopete.spec and RPM will sort out the rest.
