I just used kopete for the first time (0.12.3) and had this encoding problem.
Changing the encoding from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-15 solved the umlauts.
But, not directly. A restart of kopete was needed.
It would be very nice if the encoding (e.g. from the away-message and such
things) would be updated immediately.
