I can confirm this problem, too.
(K)Ubuntu 7.10 amd64, KDE 3.5.8, Kopete 0.12.7
How to cause this problem:
1) when I copy & paste text to a chat window and send it, there are no new lines
2) when I write some text into the chat window and use Alt+Enter as a new line
(Ctrl+Enter is OK)
