Also, something a little weird that I noticed:
in kopete 3.5.9, when I right click on the contact and then 'User Info', the
away message in the dialog is the correct one (and the away message in the
contact list is also updated), so it only seems to be a contact list update
problem.
However in kopete 4.0.3, the away message in the contact list is updated but in
the dialog it is still set to the previous one, and so I need to close this
dialog and open it again to have it display the correct message.
