LaTeX formulas are aligned along with the baseline of the surrounding text, but
for tall formulas, I would consider it better to align them vertically centered.
As an example, take this message: The TeX code $$\frac{\frac ab}{\frac cd}$$
creates a very tall formula.
In a perfect world, the text would align correctly in all cases. For example,
in $$\frac a{\frac b{\frac cd}}$$, the alignment would be another one than in
$$\frac{\frac{\frac ab}c}d$$ (just like LaTeX would do). However, I'm aware
that this is very hard to impossible to accomplish.
