You can see the tesbed protocol as a base. It's the simplest protocol. If there is still few references to qt3support they should be easy to remove. You have the reference API there http://api.kde.org/4.x-api/kdenetwork-apidocs/kopete/libkopete/html/index.html otherwise join #kopete or ask question here.
