If I may offer an out-of-the-box solution....I used vmware for years and for many reasons discovered putting Windoze on my throwaway PC and talking to it via VNC was much nicer.
Your situation must be different. I don't have the space for another '"throwaway" PC in my study. So I would rather run the infrequent Windows job on a virtual computer.
I use it on my laptop to run Garmin's MapSource which doesn't work under WINE. And of course, I need to plug my GPS into the laptop to DL some maps, not some remote computer.
At work, we use vmWare to run *multiple* virtual machines to maximize hardware usage, reduce hardware footprint and maintenance (a single initial disk-image for all machines), and not to provide Windows access for Linux users.
