I installed StarOffice back in the day with the /net option by su'ing
to an "application" account after making the target directory writable
by that account. It worked fine.

I see the current trend as something akin to shipping systems with all
services running by default.  It's dangerous and not necessary, but it
is also just so gosh-darned convenient.
