I see your point.  The fan on my notebook got noisy after I started using a 250 
GB external drive...  Then my internal hard drive started getting flaky too...  
My reasoning was that that fan needed at least a certain rotational speed to 
keep the blade moving in a path where they didn't bump into the casing...  But 
maybe I'm all wet as to the cause of the problems...   w
