I have a P II 266 4GB disk 96MB RAM machine I want to give to someone for her son to use. I just threw away a bunch of old CDs, including ancient Linux CDs and the NT Workstation 4.0 that is supported on this box :-) What distro will result in a decent experience on this hardware? I have a feeling I'm not going to want KDE or Gnome... maybe some really lightweight window manager so it can have a browser, word processor, maybe graphics, some games, etc.
Consider Vector Linux -- Slackware based and optimized for older hardware. 3 lightweight WM's: XFCE4, Fluxbox. IceWM. I've been running it on a P-233 MMX with good results. Not blazingly fast, but much faster than I expected.
