I'd like to throw out all my crusty tape cassettes after
converting them to MP3s and storing them on my hard drive.

(Likewise for VHS tapes)

What is the best Linux software and easiest/cheapest way
to do this?

But isn't that why you are allowed to "backup" your music, in case you "lose" the original (to stupidity, fire, kids)

Download the files, and lock the originals away in storage, so if the lawyers come hunting you down, you can show you own the originals.
