Exactly.

I've been reading, this week, _Artificial Life_ by Steven Levy, and
_The Caves of Steel_ by Isaac Asimov.  The first is the Steven Levy
style of journalistic outlining of people working on alife.  The other
is a novel in Asimov's Robot series.  My thoughts have been on this
kind of thing, and I've imagined growing "life", or at least
complicated interlocking sets of algorithms and input channels that
give a life-like appearance, and then simply loading the software
life-likes into a hardware robot.

It occurred to me a few minutes ago that live CDs are essentially a
primitive version of this.
