Todd,
VMWare is able to boot from a CD! 

Make sure your CD is connect (or point the VMWare cdrom to a .iso file, like 
one from http://www.sysresccd.org/), make sure that the cdrom for that vm is 
set to 'connect at power on'. You might also need to hit F2 after starting the 
vm to go into the vm's bios to make the cdrom device the first boot device.

I've done this quite a few times (booting some type of rescue CD to "fix" a vm 
that sounds like it's in a similar state as yours), works great, and should 
accomplish what you're looking to do...
