There's this really nifty tool on Windows called SiSoft Sandra. It examines your computer and OS and profiles it. It says, "You have this much memory, and it's of this type. Your CPU is this make, model, speed, etc. You have these drives..." and so on.
Is there anything that runs in Linux that will profile/describe a computer's hardware?
If you are using KDE, try from the KDE menu,
System Tools | Hardware Browser
The information can also be found in the KDE Control Center under Information in the Index tree.
Without looking, I suspect there are several apps to meet your needs to be found on http://freshmeat.net.
You may also be able to run your Windows app from Wine or Crossover Office.
