Now that my consulting company has been absorbed by a larger outfit and
I am in a management role with a bunch of programmers to look after and
a bunch of projects to keep moving I am thinking maybe it would be
acceptable to point my hair *just slightly* by employing some sort of
project management software. Does anyone really find this stuff useful?
FC3/Gnome comes with Imendio Planner 0.12.1 which looks to be about as
good as any other open source project management software. There seem to
be a few dead projects in this area. But this one is apparently under
active development.
MrProject (http://mrproject.codefactory.se/) has a good reputation,
although I have not used it myself. "project management" gets 186 hits
on freshmeat, giving you an idea of how many others have followed this
path.
I'm reminded of something attributed to the great 19th Century
physician, Osler: "If there are many treatments for the same condition
equally popular, then probably none of them are particularly effective."
I suppose I don't need to say this, but I will anyway. The tool you use
is far less important than the process you put in place.
Having taken a couple Project Management courses, and having used a couple
PM applications (including M$ Project), I can say the Mr Project leaves a lot
to be desired for managing a real project. I did a search for good, free PM
software and found nothing that would do what I needed - Gantt charts, Pert,
Critical Path, WBS, Resource management, etc. I also needed (well, I still need
it - now I need to be able to do projects for work) M$ Project file format
compatibility. That said, I found a non-free application that works well,
Intellisys Project Desktop (or Enterprise, depending upon your needs)
http://web.intellisys.com. It's $159 for the desktop version, and due to yet
another DNS problem I can't lookup the Enterprise version. Its native file
format is M$ Project format and it is multi-platform.
Well, I'd like to add to this, my family is waiting for me 'cause I'm taking
them out for miniature golf. Maybe I can elaborate when I get back (if I
remember).
