I finally found Tracy's postings... Our company s/w was flagging them as 50% chance of SPAM...
Long enough for the author to profit by it, short enough that we all get to enjoy the fruits of our tax dollars gone towards copyright enforcement in a reasonable time. I think reasonable means less than 10 years. The vast majority of projects are quite profitable within 10 years if they are ever going to be at all.
The argument against this (firstly from the film companies) is that they don't want their work to be used for "nefarious" purposes when the copyright expires. ie. excerpts of Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz in a porno film once it becomes public domain. Too bad I say, but that's what they bitch about.
From an FOSS POV, what happens when this term on copyright expires ?
Since Linux is now > 10 years old, if the copyrights had expired, wouldn't anyone be able to use the code in any way they see fit, including modification without returning the mod's to the public ?
