I don't think it was "Most Popular" by a long shot, unless you limit
the market. SunOS, AIX, HPUX, IRIX, plus the various AT&T offerings,
and, of course, BSD, were all out there.
And surely it didn't have the same kind of market
share that Windows does, did it?
Something I never really thought of before until reading this just now.
If one were to combine all UNIX like operating systems, and compare their
installed base to Windows, how would the market share ratio look then? After
all, there's only one company that makes Windows (and when you get down to it,
only one Windows kernel), but there are many that make UNIX like operating
systems, and there are many UNIX like kernels.
