If it's running Sambe 3.x, and in a W2K AD domain, good god, Samba should be 
using AD authentication and encrypted passwords!  It's right there in the 
docs (don't use "domain", "server", or "user", either.)

you want this in your [global] section:

  realm = YOUR.AD.KERBEROS.REALM
  security = ADS

If the admin doesn't already have this book, strongly suggest that it be 
purchased. :)
