Okay, this is just rant, unless someone can actually suggest a fix.

It drives me freakin' crazy that the rectangles that represent windows
on the Gnome task bar change their size, seemingly at random. For
example, right now I have a terminal and a browser open. Both of
their rectangles are about 2.5 inches wide. If I open another
terminal window there are three rectangles (which makes sense) but
they're each almost four inches wide now. If I open some other
application (which makes four now) then they drop to a little less
than the width of the original two, and they seem to drop consistently
from there, as more gets opened. Also, the window widths change as
the application merely changes what was in the title bar, sometimes by
half an inch, sometimes drastically. Also, when I open an application
that already has an instance opened, Gnome puts it's rectangle next to
the other one and doesn't give me the option to change that. And when
I open the properties window for the task bar it puts it all the way
at the beginning (left side) of the task bar!! It just doesn't make
sense!!
