My primary watchstation was reactor operator, so I sat in the middle. However, I frequenty stood throttleman watches (on the left), and was qualified to stand electrical operator watches (on the right) as well. I served during the Nixon/Ford/Carter era, and we were always short-handed. In addition, the submarine service was was very big on cross-training, and we were strongly encouraged to qualify for as many watchstations as possible.
