Perhaps in hindsight.  But I think their motivation for doing it was
probably still software.  They saw the console becoming a
multi-purpose entertainment device, something that was becoming, or
could be made to become, the focal point of living rooms everywhere,
and that means money.  If all that money was being put towards a box
that ran Microsoft software, that means ka-ching for them.

In other words, it's still about software.  At least at this point.
