motherboard BIOS. The drive can be "Clipped" to 32 GB
but that would certainly restrict the test to only about a
fifth of the drive capacity.
The problem could, by luck, be on that one-fifth...
When a BIOS can only handle a certain size of hard drive, what is
actually limiting it? Can it still access the entire drive,
physically, but only address a limited amount? Or is it that it will
only physically move the read head to certain orbits? Or... what?
The answer may be relevant to this problem.

Every HDD I've seen over 32 GB has a jumper which will "Clip" the drive
to a maximum accessible capacity of 32 GB. With this jumper set, the
remaining portion of the drive is not available, even with Linux.
Disclaimer: Obviously I haven't tried every drive under all OS's,
distributions or hardware combinations. But the above rule has held
under all conditions in my personal experience.
