It was the start button that nailed my reaction to MSWindows shut. I
simply *loathe* the start-button concept.

And what would you suggest in its stead?

Root window menus. See Window Maker.

The problem I have with Root Window Menus is the same problem I have with icon's on the desktop (and I was a GUI designer for 5 years for Ericsson - OpenWindows then Motif then native X11). You have to either reserve some background space so you can always find the Root Window (WM's can do that easily enuff, setup Maximize to 100% vertical, 90% horizontal) or you do what Windows did (BLEH!) and instantly hide all the apps on the desktop to get to your icons/root. You can accomplish a similar task with Virtual Desktops by switching to an unused desktop, but then any app you start, you prolly want to "Send" to another desktop. It's cumbersome.

With WindowMaker, you can assign a key sequence to bring up the root
window menu. You don't have to maintain any free space. Since Window
Maker has a dock and a fiend (clip) you usually do have root window
space available. I don't cover my dock or fiend, so I can view the
system monitoring dockapps. There is (almost) always root window space
below my dock.

The keysequence is a good idea (but it's the same as Apple's one-mouse-button, modified by any number of keys) and I prefer to keep my hands off the keyboard if I can, but not covering your dock/friend is either the same as 100%/90%, or you manually shape your windows.
