I don't know how Autofs mounts default, and obviously I'm postulating
here that this *may* be at the root of your problem.
/etc/auto.master is the base, which leads to other configuration files
for various "watchpoints". These sub-config files list how to mount the
"on-demand" FS, including NFS mounts, and any appropriate mount flags.
Is there any reason to prefer this to an explicit entry in /etc/fstab?
On demand is nice for removeable media, especially with a low timeout
(who cares, it'll remount :)
For NFS, it's useful when you add new machines to the network. You don't
have to go to everyones fstab and add a new export. We use
/net/$hostname for example
