Which version of VMware? There were some problems with the VMware tools in
the 4.5 series until 4.5.2. Also, 5.0 has problems which were a reversion
to the previous problems.

The work-around is to force your X session to go to 85Hz by editing the
xorg.conf file and specify 85Hz as the vertical refresh rate for the
monitor. Don't give it a range.
