I don't know how big or isolated Johnstown, PA is, but in many small(and
mid-sized) towns, people shop at Wal*Mart because there is no other
option, Wal*Mart having undercut and driven out of business everyone
else. I'd imagine the same scenario has happened in the Central Valley.
I know I've noticed this a lot when traveling across the Midwest.
You exit the Interstate and(as is habit for me) head downtown to find
naught but empty storefronts. Ask at the gas station where to buy
supplies and you hear the same thing - "Well, just head on down Rt. 41
and you'll see the Wal*Mart on the left".
