For a good understanding of evolutionary principles, I *highly*
recommend _Darwin's Dangerous Idea_ by Daniel Dennett. This book
thrilled me so much that I recommend it to anyone. Interested in
basket weaving? I recommend DDI. Dennett ("Dawkins' lapdog") is a
philosopher at Tufts University. His book follows the workings of
Darwinism from its very roots, and looks at some of the various
applications of the theory. Of particular interest to this list,
Dennett devotes a chapter and some specifically to the field of
engineering. I can't recommend this book enough.
As far as genetic algorithms go, I have a possible word of warning. I
own two books on the topic: _Genetic Programming_ and _Genetic
Programming II_, both by John R. Koza. He defines genetic programming
as a subset of genetic algorithms. So, if you search for GA stuff you
might want to keep in mind that what you're looking for might also be
keyworded as GP.
I haven't read the GP books (but they look pretty on my bookshelf!).
One Amazon review says:
"Yeah, its a big book...weighs a ton. However, only the first few
chapters are concerned with the basic mechanisms of GP (should be
familiar to anyone with a background in genetic algorithms or
evolutionary computation). The rest of the book is chock full of
examples on how to apply GP. These examples are essential and very
welcome. I've found that I can usually find a solved problem in Koza
that is similar to what I'm after, then I adapt it to my needs. This
is a great reference, but don't be fooled into thinking this book is a
tutorial. Think of it more as an exposition of GP with examples. For a
tutorial, look somewhere else."
