Quoting Gabriel Sechan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:

Hmm. I've actually heard horror stories about Qualcomm. Mainly hire/fire
cycles- they hire someone for a project, then do mass layoffs when the
projects are over. Care to confirm/deny if you can?

I'd 2nd what O'Keefe said and add some more info/details...

The only cases of this I know of, are ones where it's known for a long time,
and known up front, that these people are hired on for a specific type of
project. The really big one that a lot of people were still sour about,
which is beyond me why, was the Globalstar project. It was known for well
over a year that it was going to fold and that many people were going to have
to be let go. Too many people just wouldn't face facts and didn't look for
another job.

That aside, this company is very good at, and works damn hard to try and find
people another job inside the company. In fact, sometimes it can be a huge
pain in the ass. I remember when we were trying to find new admins when
Globalstar was winding down, and we weren't allowed to look outside the
company at all.. until we interviewed and gave long winded reasons why we
wouldn't hire the people from that group that had applied for our slots. I
might not have minded except for they were all basically people who had
installed linux once (in the best case) on a lab box, and figured that made
them an admin. That went on for months at a stretch.

There were actually some cases where they forced us to reconsider people a 2nd
time, based on the word of some random management people who knew the people
that applied to us internally, and gave them good recommendations.. not
knowing a thing about the requirements of our actual positions, of course.
Too many programmers think they're admins... and the reverse is probably true
too.. not for me though, I know I can't code. :)

It really sucks when you have to explain, to people that don't understand what
your job is, why a person doesn't fit. Without basically saying they're an
idiot. Me? If it were for a friend of mine applying for, say, a chip
designer.. and one of the engineers doing that job told me they weren't right
for the job, I'd listen to them and stop bothering them.
