well it doesn't take *that* long... or maybe longer if they are small
files...

unison is designed just for this purpose, it keeps a database file of
the state so the initial check for differences is much faster.

3 downsides, the interface is so feature full it can be confusing.  It
is very particular to version mismatch. The initial database generation
can be *very* time consuming.
