I'm not sure where this thread started... but google has lit up 
Bryant Park (NYC) for quite a while.

It's really cool to get free broadband in the park, but due to the
nature of round robin gateway, latency can be high (seconds) when the
park is full. Web pages are okay, but if you are using ssh, better think
about using screen.

oh, there is a 9"x12" sign that says wifi sponsored by google in the
park and the "agree to not do anything illegal, first web page" says
google too.
