We deal with this situation a lot. Even if the spyware is
gone, if it changed browser or registry settings or replaced
a dll the removal cannot undo the mischief.

If a reinstall is seriously undesirable/impractical, check
out the website http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/ .
Cleaning an infested machine is complicated. He provides a
lot of good info and tools.

For what it's worth, we use the free versions of AdAwareSE
and "Spybot Search and Destroy", usually in combination.
They're excellent for free products.

Recently though, I've been reading about and testing a
commercial product called CounterSpy. Independent labs
have been rating it at 98% detection and removal, the
highest rating in the world for a single product. Higher
even than many combinations.

They provide a free 15-day trial. Free download. It does
not work at all on Windows NT, and sometimes requires a
tweak to work on '98. Works great on everything else.

My most interesting test was to clean an infested machine with
both AdAwareSE and Spybot until they could find nothing else.
Then I ran CounterSpy on it. CS found and removed a dozen more
pests. In my reading and experience it is very common for one
product to find things another did not. But CS seems to be the
absolute best so far.

For continual use beyond the 15 day trial period, they only
charge $20 a year.
