Just to add an observation:  the CD burning software will catch
problems if it is asked to.  K3b has this capability available from
its GUI.  As far as I can tell, Xcdroast does not.
I don't know of any command-line interface that checks the recorded
data, except for a shell script that I wrote.  It calls the shell
script that I also wrote which appeared upthread, both as an
attachment and as just plain text.

Also the code in K3b to verify DVDs is broken.  I think many of these
verification problems are related to the zero-fill run-out that is
added in varying amounts to the end of the burn.  This  changes the
MD5 sum but does not change the actual useful recorded data.
