Why does everybody bring up VNC when talking about how bad X11 is over remote networks? VNC is *much* worse for every application I have ever cared about. And not by a little bit, either.

surprisingly usable over a 56kbps connection.

That's what you need to do, but, man, that code must suck to maintain. *Everything* is effectively a special case.

Despite these, you are much better off learning to use the command line
tools to do remote admin work.
