I've noticed that there is a difference in the behavior of modprobe when
running in a console vs running in an xterm. Specifically, messages that
are produced when running in a console are suppressed when running in a
xterm (or konsole for KDE, GNOME terminal for GNOME).

My system is a Fedora Core 3 with a few updates, but I've seen this before.
I just tested it on Debian 3.3 (actually KnoppMyth) and the same thing
happens.

My sample module is ppa, the parallel port driver for Zip drives. You don't
need a Zip drive to test this. When I do a:

$ sudo /sbin/modprobe ppa

in the console, I get a message:

ppa: Version 2.07 (for Linux 2.4.x)

but if I unload the module and then load it in an xterm I get no output.
Other load/unload orders and a reboot have no effect. I find this behavior
quite strange and I can't find an explanation for it without plunging into
the source code.

Anyone have any insights into this?

Gus
