*Any* of the Sound Blasters cards will /not/ work. Some will, especially
the older ones. With Creative having recently acquired some Euro sound card
maker, they are now integrating that chip into some of their newer cards.
I know for a fact that the new SB Live! Digital will not work in Linux yet.
I also know for a fact that the current Audigy2 ZS 7.1 *does* work in Linux
(I have one running in each of two boxes in front of me - one well enough
to get good sound from Doom 3).
Some white box SB Live! cards work great in Linux, some will kinda work,
and some won't. The white box cards were made for specific OEM's (e.g.
Dell) and may require slightly tweaked drivers - think Windows - and are
not supported by Creative.
There is a website which lists Linux compatible (and incompatible) sound
cards. But I forget where it's at. Probably pointed to by Alsa's website.
Does anyone know about the compatibility of onboard sound cards? I'm
building a new massive workhorse, one of its jobs will be to run MythTV as
well. Not being an audiophile, I was hoping to get by on just the built in
sound card on most motherboards these days. Anyone know which chipsets
have/don't have compatible sound? Both in single and dual processors if you
have such a website, I'm considering going dual proc and not upgrading again
for a long time.
